Organic Certification

Learn more about organic certification from Chuck Samuelson of Heal The Earth.

In December 3 years ago we closed escrow on our farm. I like to joke that my girlfriend bought a farm and so now I’m a farmer. Truth is that I come from a small farming community on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in Northeastern Montana. The planting, tending, harvesting rhythms are in my blood. The crops are different, but much is the same. One of the things that is true across crops and farms and locations is that the healthier the soil, the healthier the crops. It is also true that you only get truly healthy soil by building the soil up through organic and regenerative practices.

Organic certification, which shows to the world that you are using only those techniques and products that will build your soil is a process that takes a minimum of 3 years. We began organic-only farming on our very first day on the farm. Now we have the certification to show it.

While that may seem like a long time, much of my work on the farm is measured in 5-, 10-, and 15-year timeframes. That makes the 3+ years getting our organic certification seem like we only started this yesterday. Nevertheless, this is an important milestone for our farm of which we are very proud.

We need more organic farms. San Diego County is home to more small farms than any other county in America and more organic farms than any other county in America. Still, we need more. In the US, only 1% of farms are organic and in California it is 5%. Better, but still far short of what need.

You can help by buying organic whenever possible, and for heaven’s sake, please buy local. Our avocado trees thank you and so does the farmer who sings to them.

At Heal The Earth, we’re all about embracing nature’s rhythm. Seasonal eating means enjoying fruits and vegetables at their peak when they’re freshest and most flavorful. But the benefits go far beyond taste. It’s about connecting with our community, reducing our environmental footprint, and nurturing our bodies with the nutrients they need, just when they need them most.

So, let’s explore what seasonal eating is and why it’s so beneficial for your health and local farmers.

           What is Seasonal Eating?

Seasonal eating is all about consuming produce that’s harvested at its natural peak, typically during your region's growing season. Think of it as eating in harmony with nature’s cycles. This means strawberries in the summer, squash in the fall, and leafy greens in the spring. It’s a simple concept with profound benefits, transforming how we approach food and wellness.

By eating seasonally, you’re following the natural ebb and flow of produce — enjoying fruits and vegetables at their most nutritious and delicious. Plus, it’s a great way to add variety to your diet throughout the year, keeping meals exciting and diverse.

Eating seasonally means getting the most out of your produce, both in terms of taste, and nutrition. Local, in-season fruits and vegetables are at their peak freshness, meaning they’re likely to be more nutrient-dense than those shipped from afar.

Choosing to eat seasonally also has a positive impact on local farmers. By purchasing their produce, you're supporting their livelihood and helping to sustain local economies. When we choose imported produce, we're not only missing out on the benefits of seasonal eating but also taking business away from our communities.

By buying from local farmers, you’re investing in sustainable farming practices that benefit the environment. And because they don't have to rely on long-distance transportation, local farmers can focus on growing varieties that are better suited for their region’s climate and soil conditions.

How You Can Incorporate Seasonal Eating into Your Diet

Incorporating seasonal eating into your diet is easier than you may think. Here are some tips to help you get started:

Visit local farmers' markets and buy directly from farmers

Join a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program

Find restaurants that offer local and seasonal dishes

Plant your own garden and focus on produce seasonal to your area

Educate yourself about the growing seasons in your region

Shop grocery store sale items (on-sale produce items are often seasonal!)

            Plan meals around seasonal produce

Preserve or freeze excess produce for later use

It may take some adjustment at first, but once you start incorporating more seasonal produce into your meals, you'll notice the difference in taste and nutrition.

How to Align Your Diet with the Harvest Calendar

To fully embrace seasonal eating, understanding your region’s harvest calendar is important. This will help you know what produce is at its peak and when it’s available.

Due to different climates, some regions may have shorter growing seasons, while others may have longer ones. Familiarizing yourself with the harvest calendar can also help you better understand where your food comes from and how it's grown.

San Diego has unique growing seasons and harvest calendars like any other region. Here's a quick guide to eating seasonally in San Diego throughout the year:

Summer (June-August): Stone fruits (peaches, plums), corn, berries

Fall (September-November): Squash, pumpkins, apples, pears

Winter (December-February): Citrus fruits (oranges, lemons), root vegetables

The True Cost of Imported Organic: Investing in Your Health and the Planet

Imported organic isn’t as good as you think it is. Learn how choosing local organic produce benefits your health, the planet, and the community.

At our local grocery stores, a quiet but significant shift is happening, prompting us to dig deeper into the stories behind the organic labels we choose. The organic section used to be a small corner of the produce department, but now it's expanded to take up multiple aisles. It seems like everyone is jumping on the organic bandwagon, but with this increased demand comes a higher price tag, leaving many consumers wondering if the benefits of organic are worth the cost.

, it often boils down to the price tags — the amount we pay at checkout. But the story doesn't end there. It extends to the environmental footprint of our food, its impact on the communities that grow it, and its implications for our health.

, without harmful pesticides or practices, means feeding our families, nurturing our environment, and supporting the livelihoods of local farmers. This choice reduces carbon emissions tied to long-haul transportation and champions farming methods that respect our planet.

This commitment to local also strengthens the fabric of our communities. It fosters a closer relationship between those who grow our food and those who consume it, ensuring mutual respect and understanding of the value and challenges involved in sustainable farming. Local farms become beacons of resilience, embodying practices that enrich our communities and ecosystems alike.

We often miss the bigger picture when we grab that organic avocado or apple from thousands of miles away. Shipping these foods around the globe racks up a huge carbon footprint, making us rethink what "organic" really means for the planet. It's a lot like bringing a bottle of water from the other side of the world when you've got a clean tap at home.

The energy used in transporting food is staggering, and it's time we factor that into our choices.

Choosing imported organic can also shortchange local farmers in those distant lands, who might get edged out by the big operations focusing on exports. This can shake up their local economy and mess with the natural balance of things back home.

Plus, relying on food from far away makes us dependent on a shaky global supply chain. Think about it: bad weather, political issues, or just a bump in prices can suddenly make our food much harder to get and more expensive.

So, why not go local with our organic picks? It reduces that carbon footprint, supports fair economics, and keeps our food system sturdy. Understanding the full plate of issues with imported organic helps us make smarter, kinder choices for our world.

Then there’s the planet to think about. Local organic farming is like Earth’s best friend. It cuts down on fossil fuel use by reducing transport needs and champions soil and biodiversity with its eco-friendly farming practices. Plus, without chemical pesticides and fertilizers, it helps keep our water and air clean, making a happier home for local wildlife.

And let’s not forget the heart of the community. Buying local organic supports our farmers, keeping the green in the community and ensuring those who grow our food can make a decent living. It tightens the bond between growers and eaters, building trust and a shared commitment to quality and sustainability. This kind of connection turns food into a community event, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual care. And for our farmers, they can build a business that'll feed their families for generations to come.

Making the Investment in Your Health and the Planet

Buying local organic might seem like a splurge, but when we look at the bigger picture, it’s an investment. An investment in our health, an investment in the planet, and an investment in our communities. By choosing local organic produce, we’re investing in a better future.

So, next time you're at the grocery store and faced with the choice between imported or local organic produce, think about the true cost of your food. Consider the impact on your health, the environment, and your community. And remember that by choosing local organic, you're making an investment in yourself and the world around you.
